You may remember I was planning to buy some fabric for a circle/infinity scarf during the Spoonflower free shipping day. After some deliberation, I ordered my Solar System pattern on 2 yards of Poly Crepe de Chine. It’s not quite as silky smooth as the Silk Crepe de Chine but it’s a lot more affordable. I only usually order swatches and fat quarters so two yards was quite exciting to receive! The detail is really great too – even tiny Pluto’s face is visible.
I buckled down to sewing quite quickly as I wanted to bring it to London with me, knowing that it would be too warm down there for a winter coat, but possibly chilly on the train and nearer home. And also since it was going to be a pretty space-themed trip. I used this handy tutorial on the Spoonflower blog. It’s for jersey, but worked perfectly for the lighter fabric too. I definitely recommend a repeat patterned fabric as you have to cut up the middle lengthways and a pattern really helps!
After trimming the edges, it’s a super simple matter of sewing the long ends together and then manoeuvring the insides to sew the short ends together in a loop, plus a tiny bit of hand sewing after you turn it the right side out. As long as you have a lot of pins, it couldn’t be easier. You can make two scarves out of the two yards of fabric and I had both mine sewed up in under an hour!
I’m so happy with how it turned out and it’s just the right kind of cosy, plus being super cute! I didn’t actually wear it at all on my trip, but it tied on to my backpack so didn’t take up any space. If you’d like to be twins, the other scarf is up for sale in my Etsy shop. I don’t plan to make any more, unless as gifts or custom orders, so one to add to your Christmas wish list!
